In this season of anticipation and preparation, we plan a variety of activities to help you prepare yourself for Christmas. All offer the chance to take a step back from secular pressures to rediscover the real meaning of this time of year.
Being a Christian: a book group
There will be an Advent reading group studying Rowan Williams recent book, “Being a Christian” in which he discusses four essential elements of the Christian life, Baptism, Bible, Eucharist and Prayer. The group will meet in the vestry at Christ Church between 11.45am and 1.00pm on the following Thursdays:
- 1 December
- 15 December
- 22 December
- 12 January
There are sign-up sheets in both churches if you would like to join.
Please join us on Monday, 5 December between 9.30am and 12 noon when we shall be reading through St Matthew’s gospel in Christ Church vestry. Enquiries to Fr Jack, Fr Richard or Olive Thursby
Faith and Spirituality Group
Keeping the faith
Our Faith and Spirituality Group provides the opportunity for spiritual learning, growth and fellowship beyond formal church services. Aimed primarily at church members, we plan and support a wide range of activities such as study groups, readings and visits.
Bible Reading Fellowship Notes
BRF notes are sets of pocket-sized books offering a daily Bible reading, commentaries and prayers. Interesting, enlightening and easy to read, they are issued three times a year. Subscription currently costs £12.95 per year.
Start the month
Two monthly house groups – one morning, one evening, both in private homes – discuss the gospel and other readings set for the following Sunday. The groups may also talk about any issues of current concern.
During the season of Lent, we run a serIes of small groups exploring a set topic or book of the bible. Run together with other local churches, our groups meet for a couple of hours once a week for 5 weeks and take place at different times of the day to suit everybody’s lifestyle. They represent a great opportunity for discussion and reflection in the run up to Easter.
Outings and occasional activities
We also arrange regular trips and outings to all kinds of relevant and interesting places. We’re always on the lookout for somewhere new, so if you have any suggestions please don’t be shy.
- Visits to art galleries and exhibitions with a Christian theme
- Days spent at a local quiet garden
- Visits to the World War I sites and sights in and around Ypres, to reflect upon and keep alive the memory of that conflict.
