As a parish we are committed to fair trade. We serve only fairly traded tea and coffee at all our meetings and gatherings. We also support the work of Traidcraft, selling a wide variety of goods on our stalls at both churches on the first Sunday of the month. The twice-yearly catalogues are also available so that we can make orders of cards, presents, household goods and foodstuffs as well as clothing and jewellery. Christmas time is a busy time and orders are taken and delivered weekly.
Traidcraft is a Christian response to poverty, established in 1979 to fight poverty through trade – this about justice, not charity!
Traidcraft plc, a trading company, buys from poor people helping them build better lives through fair trade.
As regular Traidcraft supporters, we ‘earn’ money through the bulk discounts we get. With our annual surplus we support the work of Traidcraft Exchange, which works with the producers, advising them on marketing, business management, fashions (ie. what is selling well in the West!) so that they are better able to win their fair share of world trade.
At last fair trade principles are beginning to be felt more in our High Street and supermarkets. Look for the fair trade logo (below) when you are doing your regular shopping and look at the online database http://www.tradingfairly.co.uk to see what sort of goods are available near you.
